First Nations Challenge Cup
tournament format
The team (first nation community) that accumulates the most combined
team points after the three days of competition is declared champion.
Teams must consist of 8 players and be ranked 1 thru 8 with the best
player being ranked #1 to least best ranked #8. (Note: Very important
to have player ranking order correct)
The tournament is played in the following three formats:
1st Day: TWO-MAN
SCRAMBLE
Each team will form four two-man scramble teams. The top four players
ranked 1&2 and 3&4 will form two teams and compete in an “A-Division”
category against similar ranked players of competing teams. Similarly
the bottom four players ranked 5&6 and 7&8 will form two teams
and play in a “B Division” category. The higher the scramble team’s
finish in their respective categories will determine how many points
they make for their team. Tied positions and the points associated
with those positions will be split equally amongst the tied teams.
Each four scramble team’s points are then totaled to give the team’s
total points for the first day’s scramble play.
2nd Day: STROKE
PLAY
Each team’s players, ranked 1 thru 8, will play in a flight against
similar ranked players of competing teams. The higher each player
finishes in his flight will determine how many points he makes for
his respective team. All of the team’s eight player’s points are then
totaled to give each team’s total points for the 2nd day’s Stroke
Play format.
3rd Day: MATCH
PLAY (Championship Category)
MODIFIED STABLEFORD (Consolation Category)
After the second day is complete, each team’s points for the scramble and stroke play format is combined to give each team’s combined two day point total. The top six teams with the most points will move on to play for the SFNCC trophy in the championship category, with the remaining teams (ranked 7th thru 30th) relegated to the consolation category. Note: Tie breaker options to determine the top six in the championship category are provided in more detail in registration packages.
Championship Category
For the teams that qualify for the championship category, their points for the first two days will be carried over into the final day’s match play format. The team pairings will be as follows 1 vs. 2; 3 vs. 4; and 5 vs. 6. Each player (1 thru 8) will play similar ranked player on opposing team. Each hole will be worth 1pt for a maximum of 18pts per match x 8 matches for a grand total of 144 (18pts x 8 matches) possible points to be won by entire team. Each team’s total match-play points are then combined to the first two-day total to give each team’s grand total points for three days. The team with the most points is declared the champion. If there is a tie after the match play round is complete, the tied teams will pick one player from their respective team to play in a sudden death playoff to determine the champion.
Consolation Category
For the teams that qualify for the consolation category their points
from the first two days will be wiped out to zero. They will then
play in a one day shoot-out in a modified stableford system, with
the top four teams winning the four consolation spots available (based
on 30 teams).
