Position: 
DIRECTOR OF GOVERNANCE
Type: FULL TIME TERM– Six (6) month probationary period.
Salary: Depending on qualifications and experience.
 
Summary: The Director of Governance will be required to work with the overall management team of Ahtahkakoop to oversee the strategic planning, board administration and play a key role in influencing the overall strategic direction of Ahtahkakoop Council, Management, and Staff. The successful candidate will be a dynamic, energetic, self-motivated professional who will work under the support and supervision of the Band Administrator. He/She ensures that the mandate of overall Governance is carried out professionally and in accordance with current Policies and create new policies if the need arises for the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • To Provide advice, direction and interpretation of all policies and procedures
  • Management and oversight of Ahtahkakoop’s Annual General Meeting
  • Writing Governance documents and reports as required including regular review of governance best practises.
  • Support and provide guidance to the Council, Boards and staff on governance related matters
  • Responsible for knowledge of developments in the areas of Ahtahkakoops mandate and provide briefings to committee chairs, council and management
  • Coordinate the preparation for and follow up to committee meetings, including agendas, reports to governance bodies and the written record of the meetings
  • Preservation of corporate files and documents for Ahtahkakoop, council, boards and supporting the Band Administrator as required
  • Act as a leading source on matters related to internal and external governance processes
  • Manage and maintains draft agendas, minutes and reports for designated committee or decision making bodies
 
Qualification, Skills, Knowledge and Experience
As the ideal candidate, you should have strong post-secondary academic credentials that may include a degree in Political Studies, Indigenous Studies, or related Field, as well as at least five years related work experience or senior management expertise. Experience Ideally gained in management or in a Tribal Council role or working with different levels of government in First Nations and Non First nations areas. Must have knowledge of First Nations Governance, legal rules, systems and guidelines as well as provincial and federal legislations, policy and initiatives impacting First Nations. Must have proven knowledge skills and abilities in project management. In depth knowledge of diverse business functions and principles. Be proficient in computer skills. Understand and be willing to learn about inherent rights of First Nations, First Nations Treaties and the relationship between the Crown and First Nations Governance models. Must have excellent written and communication skills to deal effectively and efficiently with all. Must be well organized and ensure that confidential matters remain confidential. Must have Negotiation skills, leadership skills and facilitation skills. Be able to multi-task and work with minimum supervision. Must possess a valid drivers license and willing to submit a CPIC.
